Field Trip and Dinner Meeting - Herkimer Diamonds. Field trip focus is on high accuracy mapping, structural Geology and stratigraphy of the Little Falls Dolostone and quartz bearing zones. Evening presentation expands on field trip content.

David Weld Sanctuary
North Shore of Long Island

The Northeast Section of AIPG (NE-AIPG) and Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG) invites all members and their guests to attend the 2014 Spring Meeting on Long Island's north shore. The highlight of this meeting is a tour of the David Weld Sanctuary located in Nissequogue, just west of the SUNY Stony Brook campus. The sanctuary was donated to The Nature Conservancy by Mr. and Mrs. David Weld between 1969 and 1979, with additional land donated by their neighbors.
The site is comprised of 125 acres and features three miles of trails that travel through a variety of habitats. It includes 1,800 feet of shoreline along Long Island Sound dotted with large glacial erratics. Fifty-foot high bluffs separate the shoreline from the rest of the site, which is made up of meadows, woodlands and a woodland swamp. Thanks in large part to sculpting by glaciers, the landscape is host to a large variety of trees, smaller plants, birds and mammals. It is a popular place for geology buffs, nature lovers and bird watchers. The tour will be led by Dr. Gilbert N. Hanson, Distinguished Service Professor in the Geosciences Department of SUNY Stony Brook.
Following the field trip, please join us for a joint meeting with the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists at the Holiday Inn at 215 Sunnyside Blvd, Plainview, New York. There will be a social hour before dinner, followed by an after-dinner presentation by Dr. Hanson. Dr. Hanson is well known for his expertise on local geology and has given many field trips of the area. His talk will touch on the glacial history of Long Island.
